MR angiography (vascular diagnostics)

Completely painless and reliable vascular imaging that does not require a catheter. In most examinations, a contrast agent is administered so that the interior of the vessels can be clearly identified in the image. Our new 3-Tesla device can also perform MR angiographies without the use of contrast agent (Please note our contrast agent information sheets). The resulting image (MR angiogram) is used to identify numerous vascular diseases.

Common uses

  • Assessment of the cerebral vessels (arteriosclerosis, aneurysm, arteriovenous malformations)
  • Examination of the aorta and the carotid arteries (aneurysm, dissection, constriction, occlusion)
  • Analysis of the renal arteries, for example in the case of high blood pressure
  • Examination of the pelvic and leg arteries in case of circulatory disorders (such as intermittent claudication)
  • Examination of the mesenteric vessels (for angina abdominalis or digestive problems)
  • Assessment of dialysis shunts
  • Examination of the upper arm, forearm and hand arteries (if the blood pressure is different on the sides or Raynaud's symptoms)
  • Analysis of the pulmonary vessels (e.g. in the case of pulmonary embolism)
  • Diagnostics of the deep leg and pelvic veins (exclusion of thrombosis)

FAQ

How is the examination performed?

Lying on an examination table, you will be slide into a short magnetic tunnel. During the recording, you will hear a drumming sound caused by the electromagnetic circuitry. It is very important that you lie still during the examination, as even slight movements can cause image disturbances.

How long does the examination take?

Between 15 and 30 minutes (depending on the organ examined).

Does the exam cause pain?

The examination is completely painless and no harmful effects are currently known.

What must be considered during the examination?

Hearing aids, watches, jewelry, hair clips, glasses, etc. may not be taken into the examination room as they can become defective and / or cause image disturbances. Mascara must not / should not be worn during the examination. Patients with pacemakers, metal implants or an artificial heart valve must inform the doctor of this before the examination. Essential additional information: Credit cards are erased by the magnetic field!

Do I have to bring something to the examination?

Does a contrast agent have to be administered?

Depending on the type of examination, intravenous administration of an MRI agent may be necessary, which can contribute to the representation of certain organs and anatomical body structures and thus helps to identify pathological changes, which increases the informative value of the examination and confirms the diagnosis.
